Herban Soul Café is founded by Alexis Kimbrough whom has been in the customer service, mental health, and foodservice business for over 10 years combined. While working at a local health food store and beginning her own holistic well journey she got the idea to create a way to inspire the urban community through music, and art, culture, and her passion for delicious healthy food in a healthy way. She used herbs and healthy food and beverages to aid along her individual mental health and wellness journey.
Alexis would often visit different cafes around the city and noticed a lack of flavorful healthy food and beverage options that appealed to her. After speaking with numerous friends and family members within the urban community, she realized that they desired flavorful, healthy food options. Alexis noticed a lack of representation within the café and coffee shop community as it relates to food, music, and environment (ownership & operation). Most cafés cater to coffee and Boba tea drinkers with a very small selection of herbal tea.
Herban Soul Café’s entire menu has been crafted with holistic wellness promotion in mind from herbal teas and sandwich combinations, to the pastry and pizza options. Adding Soul and Culture into the cafe was a must, as she has a deep love for music, poetry and art.
Located at 5530 1st Ave S Birmingham Al 35212 inside Woodlawn Marketplace.
Alexis was born and raised in Selma Alabama where she witnessed in her community the effects of poverty on both mental health and wellness. She knew someone who battled depression and anxiety, or heart disease and obesity sometimes a mixture. Having friends and family whom lived in and around the black belt of Alabama experiencing similar conditions and being in food deserts – inspired her to pursue a career in mental health and wellness.
Alexis graduated from the University of West Alabama in 2016 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Social Work. After graduating college, she moved to Birmingham. Since moving to Birmingham Alexis has worked as personal trainer and in mental health as a family preservation and therapeutic foster care case manager. Alexis is currently studying to become a Herbal Tea Practitioner to continue learning more ways to help others grow mentally and physically. Incorporating her personal and professional relationship of mental health and wellness and her passion of food birthed Herban Soul Café.
